What is a pregnancy test visit? What to expect

The goals of pregnancy testing at Greene County Family Planning are to diagnose pregnancy early, and diagnose any health problems that may have adverse effects on the patient’s health.

During a pregnancy test visit, a provider will discuss the reason for coming in for the visit with the patient. Whether it’s delayed menstruation, or concerns for being at risk for an ectopic pregnancy, the provider can assist the patient in making an informed decision. Information on contraception or neutral options counseling, as appropriate, will be offered depending on the results of the pregnancy test.

In cases of life-threatening pregnancies such as ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, referrals to appropriate medical care and information needed to make informed decisions will be provided to the patient.

What if I’m not pregnant?

The cause of delayed menses should be investigated. If ectopic (tubal) pregnancy is suspected, you must be referred for immediate diagnosis and therapy.

If you are found NOT to be pregnant, you are given information about the availability of contraceptive and infertility services, as appropriate.

What if I am pregnant?

Neutral options counseling (pregnancy counseling without bias) is available to patients.

Nutrition

Patients planning to carry their pregnancies to term should be given information about good health practices during early pregnancy, especially those which serve to protect the fetus during the first three months.

Patients will be given information about nutrition, including the importance of folic acid for the prevention of neural tube defects, the importance of avoiding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and HIV and other STI prevention information. The risks associated with x-rays, medications, and other causes of birth defects will be explained.

Pregnancy Planning

Think ahead for a healthy baby!

What is a Preconception Planning Visit and What to Expect

“Thinking Ahead for a Healthy Baby” is very important! We want you to have a healthy pregnancy so your baby can have the healthiest start in life. There are many healthy habits you and your partner can do to help with your new journey. If you or your partner are planning on becoming pregnant now or in the future, make an appointment for a preconception planning visit!

The purpose of a preconception planning visit is to provide screening and education on pre-pregnancy health to people who are considering becoming pregnant. The patient will be asked to complete a form regarding their current health, medication use, lifestyle, diet and exercise, home environment, and medical, family and genetic history. This is then reviewed between the patient and provider.

Additional Testing Options

Patients will be offered HIV and other sexually transmitted infection testing and referrals or treatment if appropriate. Sexually transmitted infections including HIV can cause very serious harm to the developing fetus. Treatment of STIs, including HIV, during pregnancy can reduce the chance of harm.
