“Set & Forget” Methods

Intra-uterine devices (IUDs) and hormonal implants are long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods that are inserted in the body by one of our licensed healthcare providers. The IUD is placed in the uterus and the implant is placed in the base of someone’s non-dominant arm.

Both methods are highly effective reversible methods and gives patients the relief of not having to take a form of contraception every day.

The Mirena, Liletta, or Kyleena IUD is 99% effective. Mirena & Liletta last for 8 years, while Kyleena lasts for 5 years.

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception (EC) can stop a pregnancy before it starts.  Greene County Family Planning offers two types of emergency contraception: a hormonal pill or an IUD. Often referred to as Plan B, the hormonal pill can also be purchased at pharmacies and grocery stores under various brand names such as Next Choice, One Dose, and My Way.

Emergency contraception can be used for the following:

  • No birth control was used during vaginal sex.
  • Condom broke, slipped, or was used incorrectly.
  • Missed birth control pills, especially:
    • 2 or more missed combined pills in a row.
    • More than 3 hours late taking a progestin-only pill.
  • Birth control patch or ring fell off or out and wasn’t replaced in time.
  • Depo-Provera shot is late.
  • Sexual assault with no or failed protection.
  • IUD expulsion or suspected dislodgement.
  • Withdrawal (pull-out method) failure, such as ejaculation inside the vagina or near it.

Emergency Contraception is available to all those who need it. There are no age, sex, or gender restrictions on who can get over-the-counter emergency contraception, and you don’t have to show ID to get it. If you have had unprotected sex, are afraid of the risk of pregnancy, or non-consensual acts have taken place, EC can be taken immediately or up to 3-5 days after.

Emergency contraception is available for walk-in appointments. For more information, call our office at (518) 719-3580 or schedule an appointment today.

EC is NOT:

  • It is NOT a method of abortion, and it will not cause an abortion.
  • It will NOT work if you are already pregnant from a previous sexual encounter, and will NOT cause birth defects to a developing fetus.
  • It is NOT a way to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
  • It does not prevent HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Should NOT be used as a form of daily, weekly, or monthly contraception.

EC IS…

  • A safe and reliable method, in case of an emergency, for pregnancy prevention after unprotected sex or failure of a birth control method (meaning the person was not using their birth control correctly).
  • Over-the-counter EC may not be as effective in people who weigh 165 pounds or more. Talk to your provider or pharmacist before taking.

We have two options available for Emergency Contraception:

Plan B: One Step

A.K.A. Emergency Contraception or The Morning After Pill

One Step is one hormonal pill that must be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It is up to 89% effective if taken promptly. The pill works to stop ovulation from occurring. If someone has already ovulated, Plan B may not work.

Plan C: Copper IUD

The most effective type of emergency contraception is the IUD. Unlike over-the-counter Plan B, IUDs work equally well for everyone, regardless of weight. There are two types of IUDs: non-hormonal copper IUDs (Paragard) and hormonal IUDs (such as LILETTA or Mirena). When inserted within five days of unprotected sex, IUDs are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. To use an IUD as emergency contraception, you’ll need to be seen by a healthcare provider to have one inserted. An IUD can be removed after being used as EC or remain in place as long-term birth control. LILETTA and Mirena are effective for up to eight years and Paragard for up to 12.

What is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI)?

An STI is an infection you can get by having intimate or sexual contact with someone who is infected.

This can be vaginal, oral, or anal sex, although other types of intimate skin to skin contact can pass some STIs. For example, STIs (such as Herpes and HPV) can be spread from person to person by touching the infected areas of someone’s body and then touching your own genitals or mouth.

If a person has a sexually transmitted infection, they may have no symptoms and not know they have the infection, but they can still spread the infection to others.

There are many STIs and all have serious consequences if left untreated, like infertility, ectopic pregnancies, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Did You Know?

  • 1 in 4 sexually active teenagers will contract an STI.
  • The most common STIs in young people are chlamydia and HPV.
  • Around 12 million new cases of STIs are reported every year, and 63% of those cases occur in people under 25 years old.

Greene County Family Planning offers testing and treatment for:

  • Chlamydia
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Herpes
  • Human Papilloma Virus – HPV (the virus that can cause genital warts as well as cervical, vulvar, anal, penile and oral cancer)
    • We offer the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, to individuals from 9 years old – 45 years old.
    • For those receiving the vaccine under 15 years old will receive 2 doses of the vaccine, and above 15 years old will receive 3 doses of the vaccine.
  • Vaginitis caused by yeast or bacterial organisms.

HIV and other STI testing is confidential, but we must comply with New York State reporting requirements.
