Between 2014 and 2024, the average annual crude rate of overdose deaths involving opioids in Greene County was 24.0 per 100,000, approximately 1.3 times higher than the NYS rate excluding NYC (18.3 per 100,000).

In 2024, Greene County’s crude overdose death rate was 23.4 per 100,000, compared to 14.4 per 100,000 in NYS excluding NYC.

In 2024, among 57 upstate NY counties, Greene ranked 4th for overdose deaths involving opioids.

Based on available data, overdose events in Greene County have decreased by 33% from 2021 (130 events) to 2024 (78 events). This marks the third consecutive year of decline since the 2021 peak.

Overdose death rates remain high, driven by a toxic and evolving drug supply. While overdose deaths remain a serious concern, the substances involved are shifting.

  • Fentanyl remains the most common substance involved in overdose deaths in Greene County, but the proportion of deaths involving Fentanyl is decreasing—from 90% in 2021 to 50% in 2024.
  • Prescription opioids and benzodiazepines are becoming more prevalent in fatal overdoses.
  • Though deaths involving methamphetamine/ amphetamine and xylazine had been rising, both declined in 2024 after peaking in prior years.
  • Since 2021, no overdose deaths involved heroin in Greene County

  • Over the past 12 months (July 2024 – June 2025), a total of 65 overdose events were recorded in ODMAP, with a monthly average of approximately 5 entries.
  • While entries remained relatively steady throughout the year, there were a few fluctuations—most notably overdoses peaked to 8 in September 2024, followed by a drop to just 2 events in October 2024.
