Register Short-Term Rental Units in Greene County, NY
New York State will now collect Sales Tax on Short-Term Rentals
Recent New York State legislation, including Senate Bill S820 and Assembly Bill A5686, encourages counties to create registration systems for short-term rentals. These measures were introduced to help communities better understand and manage the impact of short-term rentals while ensuring compliance with safety standards and tax requirements.
These bills establish a statewide short-term rental registry and ask property owners to provide basic information about their rental units.
The goal is to:
- Improve transparency and accountability for short-term rental operations.
- Ensure compliance with building and safety codes.
- Help local governments monitor housing impacts and maintain community stability.
Even if a county chooses to opt out of the registration requirement, New York State sales tax will still apply to short-term rental transactions.
Opting out does not remove the obligation to remit sales tax.
Why Registration Matters:
Short-term rentals bring visitors and economic benefits to our area, but they can also create challenges for local services and residents. For example:
- Emergency Services: More visitors can increase demand for ambulance and fire services, affecting response times.
- Road Maintenance: Frequent guest turnover often means heavier road usage, leading to faster wear and tear.
- Public Utilities & Infrastructure: Additional water, sewer, and waste needs can strain community resources.
- Housing Availability: Growth in short-term rentals reduces housing options for full-time residents, driving up costs and making it harder for local families to find homes.
By registering your property, you help us plan for these impacts and ensure that both residents and visitors enjoy a safe, sustainable community.
Greene County is committed to making this process simple and accessible. There is no fee to register your short-term rental unit.
