The Greene County Public Defender’s Office Mission:

To provide zealous representation to all people in our community who are financially unable to afford counsel.

We defend people who are in danger of being deprived of their liberty interest due to a qualifying criminal accusation, proceeding or family court matter. We strive to ensure that all of our clients receive the highest level of legal services possible.

Our goals are to ensure that our client’s constitutional and statutory rights are protected, that the law is administered without discrimination and disproportionate punishment, and further, that no one who is innocent is wrongfully convicted.

How to Obtain the Services of a Greene County Public Defender

If you want to be represented by an attorney from the Public Defender’s office, one MUST apply at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled court date to allow for sufficient time for your attorney to review your case.

The following will be required for an application for legal services (hereinafter referred to as application documents):

  1. Application – this can be obtained as follows:
    1. in person at the Public Defender’s physical office at 411 Main Street,
      Catskill, NY 12414;
    2. online at the Public Defender website by downloading the fillable
      application; or
    3. contacting the office to receive a copy via mail, email or facsimile.
  2. Charges/Petitions – a copy of all petitions and/or charges filed against you.
  3. Income Tax Returns – a copy of your most recently filed tax return.
  4. Recent Paystubs – 2 or 3 recent pay stubs.

There are two manners in which to apply for legal representation:

Option 1 — In person

Please bring the above application documents to the Greene County Public Defender’s Office between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:45 pm. Although the office is open until 5:00 pm, the last time to apply is 3:45 pm to allow for sufficient time to conduct the eligibility interview.

Option 2 — Email, fax, or mail

Submit the above application documents in one of the following manners:

  • Emailed to publicdefender@greenecountyny.gov
  • Faxed to 518-719-3785, or
  • Mailed to Greene County Public Defender’s Office, 411 Main Street, Suite 255, Catskill, New York 12414.

Upon receipt of the application documents, an investigator from the office will contact you to conduct an eligibility interview. If you have not received a call for the eligibility interview within 48 hours after the office receives the application, please contact the office to ensure that the application was received and contained all the supporting documentation.

The Public Defender’s Office will endeavor to conduct all eligibility interviews as quickly as possible.
